Caring for houseplant leaves: dust-free, shine and recovery
Keep leaves dust-free and fresh with a simple routine: wipe or shower, gently clean, and neatly trim away damaged leaves for a healthy look.
Leaves largely determine how beautiful your plant looks. Dust, dull deposits, or minor damage can quickly make a plant look less fresh. With a simple routine (dust removal, gentle cleaning, and smart repair), your plants will regain their shine and stay healthier.
why cleaning leaves is so important
Dust on leaves blocks light. This hinders plant growth and makes the leaves look dull. Clean leaves absorb light better and instantly look fresher.
1) Dust removal (the quick basics)
Do this once every 2–4 weeks (or more often if you have a lot of dust in your home):
- use a soft, slightly damp microfiber cloth
- gently wipe from stem to leaf tip
- Support the sheet with your other hand so you don't tear it.
Tip: Small leaves? Use a soft brush (a makeup brush works great).
2) lukewarm shower (for larger plants)
For larger plants or a lot of dust, a gentle shower works perfectly:
- place the plant in the shower/bathtub
- use lukewarm water and a gentle jet
- let it drain well before putting it back
This is also useful if you notice that your plant looks a bit “dry” due to heating.
3) sticky residue or stains?
Use a mild solution:
- lukewarm water
- possibly a very small drop of mild soap
Wipe with clean water (so that no soap remains). Always test on one sheet first.
4) Shine: Better natural than “gloss spray”
A healthy plant often shines naturally when its leaves are clean. Gloss sprays can clog the pores and are usually unnecessary. Want an extra "fresh" look? Then dusting and good lighting are often enough.

5) Recovery: What do you do with damaged leaves?
A small tear is not a problem, but you can remove very ugly or yellow leaves so that the plant puts energy into new leaves.
- cut away yellow/brown leaves with clean scissors
- cut as close to the stem as possible (without pulling)
- never remove more than 10–20% of the leaf at a time
Brown dots? This is often the cause
- too dry air (heating)
- irregular watering
- salts/lime (depending on water)
Solution: check the water level more often (see watering-houseplants ), dust the leaves and do not place the plant too close to the heater.
quick routine (5 minutes, big effect)
- Once a week: quick scan (dust, yellow leaves, stains)
- 1x every 2–4 weeks: remove leaves or shower
- Once a month: cut away ugly leaves + turn the plant a quarter turn
bonus: this way your plants stay "styled"
Clean leaves + a good spot = effortless styling. After cleaning, neatly group your plants and repeat pot colors for a sense of calm (see also color repetition pots ).
