Plant corner in a small space: how to keep it airy
Living small but still want greenery? With a single focal plant, a height difference, and simple pots, you can create a plant corner that remains spacious and stylish.
Even in a small space, you can create a plant corner that looks calm and stylish. It's not about "a lot," but about smart choices: one focal plant, light pots, plenty of airflow, and a composition with height.

1) Choose one clear focus
In a small space, a single statement plant works better than five individual pots. Place the plant in a spot where the corner feels logical (near a window, next to the sofa, or next to a cabinet) and build your space around it.
A safe start is a plant from medium-sized houseplants or, if you really want to make an impact, a beautiful eye-catcher from large houseplants .
2) Work with height (without extra floor space)
Want more greenery without cluttering it up? Use layers:
- High: one plant that carries the corner
- Middle: one plant on a stool/table/stand
- Low: one compact plant (or leave this layer out if it is really small)
By using height, you keep the floor calmer and the room appears larger.
3) Limit the number of pots
In small spaces this almost always works best:
- 2 plants if it is cramped (1 high + 1 middle)
- 3 plants if you have a little more space (high + medium + low)
More is possible, but only add when the base is calm.
4) Choose pots that look light and calm
Light shades and repetition make a corner feel more spacious. For example, choose two pots in the same color (sand/white/beige) and a maximum of one accent piece.

5) Let “air” around your plants
The greatest luxury in a small space is space. Don't place pots too close together, and leave some exposed wall or floor visible. This prevents a cluttered feeling.
6) Choose plants that don't grow "too wide"
In a small space, a plant with a distinct shape often looks calmer than one that grows in all directions. Choose plants with a compact, upright appearance.
Not sure? Start with easy-care houseplants —they often stay beautiful without much fuss.
Quick mini checklist
- 1 focus plant (statement)
- 1 extra plant at height (stool/table)
- 2 pots in the same shade
- maximum 1 accent
- sufficient air around
