Practical with pots: drainage, inner pot & maintenance

Make pots practical: use an inner pot, let water drain, and protect baskets. This way, your plants stay healthy and your interior tidy.

A beautiful pot is nice, but it only becomes truly relaxing when it's also practical. With good drainage , a smart inner pot , and a few maintenance tips, you can prevent wet spots, root problems, and watering hassles.

why drainage is so important

Most houseplants don't like wet feet. If water remains at the bottom of the pot, it can cause root rot. Drainage allows excess water to escape—and keeps your plant healthy.

1) pot with hole vs. pot without hole

  • With a drainage hole: ideal for water drainage. Place a saucer underneath or use an inner pot.
  • Without a drainage hole: this is also possible, but requires more control. It's easiest to use an inner pot/grower pot.

2) the inside pot trick (best of both worlds)

The most practical method is to leave the plant in its nursery pot/inner pot and place it in a decorative pot. Advantages:

  • you can easily lift the plant out to water it
  • you can immediately see if there is water at the bottom
  • you prevent decorative pots from getting dirty

How to water without spilling

  • lift the inner pot out of the decorative pot
  • provide water at the sink or in a bowl
  • let it drain for 5–10 minutes
  • put the plant back in the decorative pot

Tip: This also works perfectly for baskets, as it keeps the basket dry.

3) Protect baskets (prevent stains and mold)

Baskets are warm and beautiful, but sensitive to moisture. So always choose one of these options:

  • waterproof inner lining (inlay)
  • inner pot that you can lift out

4) What do you do with water that remains at the bottom?

Do you see a layer of water at the bottom of the decorative pot after watering? Pour it away. You can do this by:

  • remove the inner pot and throw away the water
  • or carefully pour the water from the decorative pot

Never leave water standing for days, not even “a little bit”.

5) Maintenance: how to keep pots looking nice

  • dust & stains: wipe ceramic with a soft cloth
  • limescale edges: clean with lukewarm water and a little vinegar (test small first)
  • baskets: keep dry, dust with a soft brush, do not clean with water
  • protect floor/furniture: use felt pads or a saucer where necessary

quick checklist (practical & worry-free)

  • work with an inner pot/growing pot
  • always let water drain
  • remove excess water from the decorative pot
  • protect baskets with an inlay or inner pot
  • clean pots occasionally (limescale & dust)
